Blue Jean + Braids

Happy May everyone!  I can't get enough off-the-shoulder tops + dresses for spring.  These styles look so perfectly laid-back and summery and have such a cute bohemian vibe.  I had pinned this super cute DIY a while back with directions for making off-the-shoulder shirts out of old men's button-downs.  Since these styles are so popular this spring, I decided to head to Salvation Army, load up on some vintage button-downs, and try it out for myself!  I think they turned out perfect (you can see all the styles I whipped up at the end of this post!).  I have very basic sewing skills (I cannot do ANYTHING fancy!), but this project was very manageable for me.  If you are nervous about trying it, I would suggest getting a practice shirt that you don't mind messing up before you try on your real shirt.  The most difficult part was getting the stitching straight around the shoulder seams but thankfully this style is pretty forgiving so you don't have to be perfect!  Here are three tutorials I read through and referenced throughout the project (they are all very similar but each have some different details that are helpful!):

The best part is that you can get men's shirts like this at your local thrift store for under $5, so it is not a huge investment for a super chic top that you will wear all spring and summer!  Since these are men's shirts they are kind of oversized, which works for the overall look except the length was a little too long.  I cut off mine so that it had a shorter, cropped look and I liked the frayed edges as well.   I stuck with the laid-back feel for the rest of my outfit, pairing my top with vintage denim cut-offs, lace-up flats, messy braids, and a vintage leather purse.  I have a feeling these super comfy tops will be getting a lot of wear over the next few months!
